Jazz! That’s what this is about!
There may be some occasional musings or tales about bicycles, beards, coffee and/or vegetables, but this will predominantly be my forum on all things jazz.
I grew up spending a lot of time with my grandparents, great aunts and great uncles. Therefore, I listened to quite a bit of jazz and big band era swing (I also played a lot of Pinochle, but that’s not what we’re talking about here!). I knew the names and music of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Cab Calloway and Enoch Light before I knew any of the popular music of my early childhood, circa 1985.
Jazz always stuck with me. While I did embrace the grunge fad of the early 90’s, like any suburban teenager of the time did, and later progressed into death metal, where I still hang out sometimes, I always had Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck and Gerry Mulligan in the rotation on my tape deck and Walkman.
Now, deep into my 30’s, the baseball cards I had as a youth are gone. They were replaced by a jazz autograph collection I started almost 10 years ago, which will be featured here. Gone also are the cd’s, replaced by old lp’s. The same can almost be said about my car, as I put just as many miles on my bicycle. I’m convinced that as I get older, I’m also going farther back in time. 🙂
I’m also a life-long vegetarian, and currently approaching 20 years of having some sort of beard. You could say that I’m a hipster from way back.
